Barnard - Big Pine (Mile 100)

  • 8 Guests

Barnard - Big Pine is a one-group campsite across the river from Barnard Park in Madison County, just upstream of Big Pine Road where Section 8 flows into Section 9. Right in the heart of Madison County, and centrally located near much of the French Broad's whitewater, this campsite is unique in that it's roadside and out of the floodplain, thus offering additional amenities not found at other sites. In addition to the typical river access, picnic table, fire ring, and composting toilet, this campsite also has a covered pavilion and access to Anderson Branch Road. Everything you need for a relaxed night on the Paddle Trail OR a cycling tour through the backroads of Madison County. That's right! This site is also great for bikepackers seeking overnight shelter alongside the beautiful French Broad.

To access these sweet amenities, you'll need to do just a little bit more walking than you might at our other sites. As you're passing Barnard Park on your right, eddy-out river-left just barely upstream of the Barnard Road bridge, pulling into the confluence of Big Pine Creek adjacent to a large culvert with a painting of a snake on it. If continuing downstream, you can secure your boats below the bridge, and walk up the gravel driveway to Anderson Branch Road, where you'll take a left, walk 50 yards, and then you'll see the campsite on your right. Alternatively, if you’re ending your trip at Barnard, you can take-out at Barnard Park (where your car is likely parked), unload your gear, and walk or drive across the bridge to the campsite.

Note that this campsite is on private land protected by our friends at RiverLink. Please respect the landowner's property and stay within the campsite area. If you drive to the campsite, please ensure to park your vehicle fully off of Anderson Branch Road in front of the chain gate. No not park elsewhere along Anderson Branch Road or anywhere on Big Pine Road.
