Saturdays April-June 10: Signs of Spring Guided Paddling with Headwaters Outfitters

APRIL 15 @ 9:15 AM1:15 PM

We offer our “Signs of Spring” a series of guided canoe trips on selected Saturdays from April through June. This guided canoe trip balances nature observation with the quiet relaxation of a morning canoe outing. Departing at 10 a.m (you must arrive by 9:15 am). from Headwaters, each canoe trip includes all paddling gear, river shuttle, and guide service. Snacks and drinks are available for sale at the shop. Prior canoeing experience is helpful, but not necessary. Reservations are required and are secured with a 50% deposit. The cost is $60 per person, though kids under 10 who sit in the middle of the canoe cost only $30.

Little Sweet Betsy (Trillium cuneatum) is just one species found along the French Broad River during Headwaters’ Signs of Spring guided canoe trip. There are over 2,500 species of wildflowers and flowering shrubs in the southern Appalachians, and many of these can be found somewhere along the French Broad River watershed. Thanks to a variety of microclimates and abundant rainfall, the French Broad hosts a beautiful array of spring flowers. The “Signs of Spring” guided trip takes full advantage of this display.

4/29/2017: FB Paddle Racing Presents the French Broad Classique

French Broad Classique on April 29, 2017, now features a shorter course!!

FB Paddle Racing, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose purpose is to foster competition in all types of paddlesports racing, particularly on the French Broad River in western North Carolina.

The primary event is the French Broad Classique held annually on the fourth Saturday of April near Asheville, North Carolina (except in 2017, when it will be held on the fifth Saturday, April 29). The French Broad Classique currently consists of two events: the FB 50, a fifty mile challenge, and the BR 12, a twelve mile race (the new kinder, gentler version of the old eighteen mile race!).

FB Paddle Racing has hosted two National Championships on the French Broad River: the 2014 USCA Aluminum Canoe/Downriver Kayak Nationals in Henderson County (upstream of Asheville), and the 2008 ACA Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver Nationals in Madison County (downstream of Asheville).

FB Paddle Racing also helps to promote paddle sports races in North Carolina and neighboring states. Click here to access information on other races generally. Also, if you are from down toward Texas and can’t make it all the way to North Carolina for the French Broad Classique this year, the USACK Marathon Team Trials is the same weekend. More information about that event can be found by clicking here.

Try out the latest models in all three categories on the still waters of Lake Julian and chat with industry experts about paddles, boating accessories, and the best spots in the region to get on the water this year.

This free event is made possible by a partnership with our friends at Buncombe County Recreation Services. Kids and well-behaved pets with owner on leash are welcome.
